"Die Stadt Wien und die Südwind Agentur laden am 30. November 2009 zur Fachtagung "Ke Nako - Es ist Zeit! Zukunftskontinent Afrika" ein. Aufgrund der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2010 blickt die Welt nach Südafrika. Ein ganzer Kontinent rückt damit ins Rampenlicht der Weltöffentlichkeit. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy.

Speech by Carl Bildt in Rimini regarding European-African cooperation
The Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt spoke on August 23 at the Rimini Meeting. His speech at the conference, 'Africa: forgotten conflicts' included the topics of globalisation and cooperation.
He said that cooperation between the EU and Africa, primarily with the African Union, must be developed and strengthened in several areas. Agricultural policy and trade were mentioned as examples.
Sweden holds the EU-presideny during the second half of 2009.

The Global Development Network (GDN) is now accepting submissions for its annual competition for
development research proposals/papers and development projects. Researchers and NGOs from developing and
transition countries are invited to participate in the competition.

New paper by Austrian Development Cooperation:
"Moderne Entwicklungsfinanzierung" (Modern Funding for Development Cooperation)
Excerpt:
"Gerade in Zeiten knapper Budgetmittel sind der effiziente und nachvollziehbare Einsatz der Mittel,
die gute Abstimmung mit anderen Gebern, noch größere Eigenverantwortung der Partnerländer und eine
möglichst breite Palette an Finanzierungsinstrumenten für eine zeitgemäße Entwicklungszusammenarbeit
notwendig. Auch Österreich verfolgt diese Prioritäten.
Die neue Architektur der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit, wie sie in der Pariser Erklärung von 2005 und der
Accra Agenda for Action von 2008 festgelegt wurde, soll mehr Effizienz und Wirksamkeit fördern.
Dementsprechend werden auch neue Finanzierungsinstrumente eingesetzt: Budgethilfe etwa wird als konkretes Instrument gesehen,
um Armut zu mindern und so die Millenniums-Entwicklungsziele zu erreichen. Auch Österreich begann 2005, in einer Reihe von
Schwerpunktländern systematisch vor allem sektorielle Budgethilfe zu leisten."

Desmond Tutu to receive an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Vienna
The University of Vienna will confer an honorary doctorate in theology on the South African Theologian and Nobel Laureate, Dr Desmond Tutu. The University substantiates the honour with Tutu’s outstanding achievement in applying a theology of "Ubuntu". The ceremony will take place at 11.00 AM on 12 June 2009, in the Main Ceremonial Chamber of the University.
Currently, Desmond Tutu is devoted to the battle against HIV/Aids in Africa, with particular concern for Aids orphans. He established the "Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation", for which the University of Vienna powers a charity concert on 13 June 2009, featuring star tenor Johan Botha and other Viennese musicians.

Sofja Kovalevskaja Award
Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Sofja Kovalevskaja Award, which is funded by the German
Federal Ministry of Education and Research, is granted to exceptionally promising junior re-searchers from abroad in recognition
of outstanding academic achievements and enables them to establish their own groups of junior researchers at research institutions
in Germany.
Scientists and scholars from abroad, whose research records to date have already qualified them to be recognised as top-level
junior researchers and who are expected to continue producing outstanding results as recipients of the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award,
are eligible to submit applications.
Scientists and scholars from all disciplines may apply directly to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
The Humboldt Foundation plans to grant up to eight Sofja Kovalevskaja Awards. The award is valued at 1.65 million EUR.

First EURO-AFRICA Cooperation Forum on ICT-Research
An event co-organised by the European Commission (EC DG INFSO) and the African Union Commission (AUC) with the support of the EuroAfrica-ICT initiative.
For the first time in Europe, sub-Saharan African and European policy-makers are being brought together with ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) research organisations to address the development of collaborative projects.

"The Africa-EU JSAP (Joint Strategy and Action Plan) was adopted at the EU-AU summit held in Lisbon in December 2007. It is a political vision and roadmap for the cooperation between the two continents in existing and new areas,
going beyond the traditional donor-recipient approach, and beyond institutions by involving non-state players, and addressing global challenges such as peace and security, climate change, migration, trade and regional integration.
Concrete actions and goals for the years 2008-2010 are outlined in eight Africa-EU Partnerships in the so called First Action Plan."

Second African Science Communication Conference
Background:
In December 2006, the SAASTA (South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancements) hosted the first African Science Communication Conference focusing specifically on the need to develop the field of Science Communication
and establish collaborative networks on the African continent engaging academics, universities, the public, science centres and private research centres, as well as industry,
the media, the education field and professional practitioners.
The specific conference objectives are to strengthen the African flagship research and development clusters in:
• Biodiversity, Biotechnology and Indigenous Knowledge;
• Energy, Water and Desertification;
• Materials Sciences, Manufacturing, Laser and Post Harvest Technologies;
• Information, Communication and Space Science Technologies;
• Improving Policy Conditions and Building Innovation Mechanisms; and
• Implementation, Funding and Governance.
Given the continent's science, technology and innovation needs and challenges, SAASTA will be hosting its 2nd African Science Communication Conference bringing together individuals across the various
sectors in realising Science Communication's role in
driving economic growth and long term sustainable development.
