'Land degradation is a major environmental, social and economic threat to many countries in all regions of the world. Since 1995 the World Day to Combat Desertification is observed every 17 June. The slogan of this year's Day is "Enhancing soils anywhere enhances life everywhere". Why is this important? Livelihood sustainability, ecosystem well-being and soil health are closely linked. Soils are an integral part of life. The way we manage our soils determines the quality and quantity of the food we eat. But the degree of soil health also determines the type of ecosystem services we receive. In times of food crises and climate change, this is of particular concern - especially in poor countries in the south. During this dialogue event we explore the current land degradation challenges in the south and discuss strategies to enhance soil health through sustainable land management practices.'
