Expeditions through space and time.
How science connects Ethiopia and Austria.
A different image of Ethiopia ...
The first things that come to mind if one thinks of Ethiopia are hunger,
poverty and conflicts. But is there not more to discover?
The KEF exhibition on 17 wall charts presents a different image of a
complex and fascinating country. Consisting of four parts altogether,
the role of science and research in the historical and present relations
between Ethiopia and Austria is illuminated:
1. Why Ethiopia and Austria? An introduction
 |
On a first glance, one of the poorest and one of the richest countries in the world
do not seem to have a lot in common. By means of historical and present encounters
between Ethiopia and Austria a multi-layered image of Ethiopia and its rich history
is drafted.
|
2. Science sets people in motion
|
What is it that makes scientists leave their home countries? And what is there to
find on foreign shores? Emigrants from interwar Austria, adventurers in search of
the ancestors of humankind, and explorers who are tracing the manifold dimensions
of water, find a voice here.
|
3. Science establishes connections
 |
Are scientists doing research only for their own sake? When scientists are travelling,
it has a wide appeal. Cultural scientists translate mysterious scripts, explorers
mediate in diplomatic negotiations, and traditional knowledge and science come
to new syntheses.
|
4. Science makes change possible
|
The eradication of smallpox, an awareness campaign against Female Genital Mutilation
and a Human Rights Training for judges, attorneys and policemen and -women are
examples of societal changes in Ethiopia in which science plays a major role.
In all these projects, Ethiopians and Austrians are working together.

Out of the ivory tower
In 2006 the Commission for Development Studies at the Austrian Academy
of Sciences (KEF) celebrated its 25th anniversary. KEF is a platform for
cooperative research projects with partners in developing countries.
It advises scientific institutions and sponsors with regard to scientific
issues of development cooperation. On the occasion of the anniversary,
we would like to make publicly available the experience values of KEF
and of the partners in the South.
The exhibition was presented from October 24th to November 17th 2006
in the auditorium of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In cooperation
with Suedwind Agency and with the support of the Austrian Development
Cooperation, it will be presented from 2007 to 2008 in educational
centres, various university locations and public places all over Austria.
