INTRAMED- Integration of traditional medical knowledge into the local health system of Indonesia
Since the introduction of public science-based health systems in Indonesia, local indigenous knowledge has been widely neglected. However, since in many places federal health systems are either absent, due to the situation of the respective community, or not available, due to financial obstacles, indigenous knowledge constitutes an important alternative to the federal health care. The INTRAMED-project, the aim of which is the integration of indigenous knowledge into the existing health care, is carried out in two communities of Java, which differ in characteristic features and in the access to health care. Especially the integration of local knowledge on medical plants could contribute to a sustainable development, if the communities drew more on locally available, cost-efficient and easily applicable resources and thus the dependence on cost-intensive chemical medication decreased. The project aims are: 1. Scientific review of existing knowledge about medical plants 2. Initiation of a participatory process, which includes agents from the community, the health system and experts. This process validates the collected data and examines possible applications in combination with scientific medicine. 3. Publication of the results for particular target groups: - Communities: Brochure for a wide readership; - Decision-makers of the federal health care system: report including results but also recommendations for integration - Scientists: scientific publication in a professional journal Further information: Institute of Social Ecology Indonesian Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (INRIK)
