In Search of Protection
Buchpräsentation und Diskussion der Forschungsergebnisse von Zena Mnasi Mabeyo und Helmut Spitzer.

Helmut Spitzer und Zena Mnasi Mabeyo präsentierten ihr neues Buch zum Thema "Soziale Sicherheit alter Menschen in Tansania" und brachten Beispiele und Erfahrungen aus KEF- und appear-Projekten.
Die Veranstaltung wurde vom Verein zur Förderung afrikanischer StudentInnen in ihren Heimatländern (Zikomo) organisiert. Der Verein bezweckt die Akquirierung von Spendengeldern, die ausschließlich für die Ausbildung von afrikanischen Studentinnen und Studenten in ihren Heimatländern verwendet werden, wobei sich die Aktivitäten zurzeit auf Sambia und Tansania konzentrieren.

Helmut Spitzer ist FH-Professor am Studienbereich Soziales der FH Kärnten und Zena Mnasi Mabeyo ist Lektorin am Institute of Social Work in Dar es Salaam, Tansania.

About the book:
"Older people in Tanzania are disadvantaged and marginalized in many ways. They lack adequate formal social protection. They also suffer from diminishing family and community support. They face a series of multi-faceted problems and care for most AIDS-orphans, yet they are a much neglected target group in national social policy and international development programs.
This book provides a theoretical discussion of ageing issues and their linkage to social protection. It depicts various policy frameworks at international, Pan- African and national level. And it provides extensive empirical findings on older people’s living conditions.

Fünfte Entwicklungstagung:
Gemeinwohl entwickeln.
Der Staat zwischen Gemeinschaft und Weltgesellschaft

Die Entwicklungstagung fand heuer zum fünften Mal statt und hat sich mittlerweile in Österreich zu einem der wichtigsten Ereignisse zum Thema Entwicklung etabliert. Die KEF war eine der Trägerorganisationen dieser Veranstaltung.

Am zweiten Tag der Tagung war im Rahmen von Open Space eine gemeinsame Präsentation von KEF und appear geplant. Helmut Spitzer und Zena Mnasi Mabeyo wollten Beispiele und Erfahrungen aus KEF und appear-Projekten und ihr neues Buch zum Thema "Soziale Sicherheit alter Menschen in Tansania" präsentieren. Das Buch wurde im Rahmen eines KEF-Projektes wissenschaftlich erörtert:

Heiliges Wasser-Hochwasser-Niedrigwasser-Giftwasser:
Ein Nachmittag zum Thema Wasser in einer sich ändernden Welt

Wasser hat immer schon das Leben der Menschen bestimmt. Der Zugang und die Qualität von Trinkwasser sowie damit zusammenhängende Infektionskrankheiten hatten unmittelbare Auswirkungen auf die Gesundheit. Die Mythen alter Kulturen reflektieren die besondere Bedeutung des Wassers. Wasserflächen als Hindernis für die Fortbewegung, aber auch als Transportmedium, Bewässerung von Nutzpflanzen und die Nutzung von Wasserkraft durch Gewerbe und Industrie beeinflussten die kulturelle Entwicklung. Das weitere Wachstum der Weltbevölkerung und der globale Wandel, vom Klimawandel über geänderte Landnutzung bis zu steigenden Ansprüchen an Wasserqualität, Nahrung und Energie machen Wasser zur Schlüsselressource künftiger Entwicklung. Während man bei vielen Ressourcen über deren Ersatz durch alternative Lösungen nachdenken kann, sind die Möglichkeiten, Wasser durch andere Stoffe zu ersetzen, oft sehr beschränkt oder überhaupt nicht gegeben. In unserer Veranstaltung zum Thema Wasser wollen wir Sie über neue Erkenntnisse informieren und Sie zur Diskussion über widersprüchliche Aspekte herausfordern.

A workshop in the context of the project ‘Researchers on the Move. Intercultural Dimensions in Science and Humanities’

A co-operative event with appear: Austrian Partnership Programme in Higher Education & Research for Development.

'In this workshop we will explore cultural and social aspects of your personal and professional reality. Based on your personal experiences during your stay in Austria we visualize concepts of culture and help you to find ways to understand differences and commons. By surfacing your own cultural background we want to strengthen your awareness of your existing potentials. You will get the chance to share your experiences by reflecting critical incidents and discuss solutions and strategies. This way you will enrich your international profile and learn using it as a resource for your professional future.'

Trainer:
Margret Steixner studied Comparative Educational Science at the Leopold Franzens University of Innsbruck, Austria and holds an International Coaching Certification from GB. She gained her PhD researching the development of intercultural competence in the field of development work. Margret lived and worked in several African countries and is now running her own Training and Coaching company. Her strength is the combination of theoretical knowledge with first hand work and life experience.
Maiada Gassan Hadaia has been coordinator of the project ‘Researchers on the Move. Intercultural Dimensions in Sciences and Humanities’ since 2008. Researchers on the Move sets out to facilitate discourse about interculturality in science as well as to create an opportunity for researchers from different backgrounds and nationalities to meet and exchange their views and it forms part of the Commission for Development Studies (KEF) at the OeAD-GmbH. Maiada Hadaia is writing her Master’s thesis at the Department of Development Studies at the University of Vienna.

Brain Waste: Modelle der Solidarität
A panel discussion in the context of the project ‘Researchers on the Move. Intercultural Dimensions in Science and Humanities’

An event organised by KEF in co-operation with Südwind Agentur, Paulo Freire Zentrum and ForscherInnen ohne Grenzen.

Die öffentliche Diskussion über die notwendige Zuwanderung von qualifizierten Fachkräften lenkt den Blick auch auf das Potenzial und die Qualifikationen von bereits in Österreich lebenden MigrantInnen. Eine Missachtung von Kompetenzen und Talenten der besonderen Art findet bei Flüchtlingen oder AsylwerberInnen mit akademisch-wissenschaftlichem Hintergrund statt.
Welche Hindernisse gibt es, diese Menschen mit ihrem Potenzial zu integrieren?
Welche Möglichkeiten bietet das Instrument des Mentoring für eine gelebte Solidarität und Interkulturalität?

Margit Kreuzhuber: Studium der Rechts- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften, Beauftragte für Migration und Integration in der WKÖ seit 2008, Koordinatorin des Projekts „Mentoring für MigrantInnen“.
Judith Kröll: Studium der Soziologie an der Universität Wien. Mitglied der transdisziplinären Forschungsgruppe XPERIMENT!. Mit-Initiatorin und derzeitige Obfrau des Vereins „ForscherInnen ohne Grenzen“. Lektorin am Institut für Wissenschaftsforschung / Universität Wien.
Aigul Salmhofer: Studium der Humanmedizin, arbeitete seit 2000 als Fachärztin für Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe, ab 2002 Jusstudium (nicht abgeschlossen). Sie lebt seit 2004 in Österreich und nostrifiziert ihr Diplom an der Medizinischen Universität Graz.
Herbert, Störi: Studium der Physik an der Universität Innsbruck. Nach einem 2-jährigen Aufenthalt bei CERN in Genf ist er seit 1981 an der TU Wien beschäftigt. Mitbegründer des Tribologie-Zentrums AC2T in Wiener Neustadt und seit 2006 Vorstand des Instituts für Angewandte Physik an der TU-Wien. Arbeitsgebiete sind Plasma- und Oberflächentechnik.

Moderation:
Rossalina Latcheva: Universitätsassistentin am Soziologischen Institut der Universität Zürich. Lehrtätigkeit an der Universität Wien, Institut für Soziologie und Institut für Politikwissenschaft im Bereich Quantitative Analysemethoden und Integrationsindikatoren. Fakultätsmitglied des interdisziplinären Doktoratskollegs „Empowerment through Human Rights“ der Universität Wien. Forschungsschwerpunkte sind u.a. Migrations- und Integrationsforschung.

Land der Gegensätze: Königreich Bhutan

Bhutan, das Königreich im Himalaya, war Thema dieser Ausstellung im Wien Energie-Haus. Bhutan zählt mit der Größe der Schweiz nur 650.000 EinwohnerInnen und hat als vorrangiges Entwicklungsziel die Steigerung des Brutto-National-Glücks.

Im Rahmen eines Sondervortrages zur Ausstellung sprachen Andreas Obrecht und Matthias Schlögl über die Elektrifizierung ländlicher Gebiete und „Glück“ als Weg zur eigenständigen Entwicklung im Königreich Bhutan.

Managing cultural diversity while working in international research teams is an essential task for young academics. More and more young researches seek periods of study and work abroad to improve their scientific career and establish new academic ties. While teaching, learning and research in a new academic environment can be an exciting and enriching experience, an unfamiliar cultural setting can at the same time entail unexpected challenges and obstacles. What are the challenges, the demands, and the basic conditions that occur when working in foreign academic settings?

Facilitators: Barbara Böttger and Diana Afrashteh
Diana Afrashteh and Barbara Böttger are international relations advisors at the Office of International Relations at the University of Graz and have a long working experience with exchange programs and international cooperation in Higher Education. They have focused on aspects of intercultural communication in their work in the past recent years and have been offering intercultural workshops for students and staff since 2006.

Second Workshop: Researchers on the Move.Intercultural Dimensions in Sciences and Humanities.

The Commission for Development Studies was pleased to invite you to the 2nd interactive workshop 'Researchers on the Move. Intercultural Dimensions in Sciences and Humanities'.

It has become more the norm that researchers are working on international teams and yet intense and meaningful communication and exchange between individuals and cultures is still not self-evident. Interculturality, as a predominant trend in our contemporary world offers us new opportunities, but at the same time raises questions. One way of doing this, is to draw from experiences and observations of people who have worked in this field. For students, scholarship holders and researchers travelling and working, internationality has become the norm rather than the exception. However, what position do science and research take in this? The aim of this workshop is to enable the participants to discuss and elaborate suitable strategies on how to successfully pursue scientific cooperation in an intercultural context. To provide us with inputs in form of personal experiences we invited the following two guests:
Ekaterina Dimitrova: MA Bulgarian Philology and Philosophy, University of Sofia and BA Sanskrit, University of Delhi.

As co-organizer we would like to draw your attention to the conference "Internationalisation and development policy dimensions at Austrian Higher Education Institutions".

Discussions, lectures and workshops with international participation will extend the (Austrian) discussion about internationalisation to the field of development cooperation and strenghten relations between the scientific community and stakeholders in development cooperation by focusing on the perspective of partner countries.
The conference addresses stakeholders and interested persons with academic background, from service organizations, public or private development related organizations as well as guest lecturers and scientists, scholarship holders and interested students.

KEF-Workshop: “Researchers on the Move. Intercultural Dimensions in Sciences and Humanities”

More and more we hear that the world has become a global village, and yet, intense and meaningful communication and exchange between individuals and cultures is still not self-evident. For students, scholarship holders and researchers traveling and working internationally has become the norm rather than the exception. However, what position do science and research take in this? It was the aim of this workshop to enable the participants to discuss and elaborate on better methods for understanding scientific cooperation in an intercultural context.

To provide the background for these discussions, two invited guests from Argentina and Uganda spoke about their very personal experiences and observations:
Helen Nakimbugwe, Uganda: Agriculturalist, focus on animal science/breeding, studies (Diplomstudium) and PhD at the Vienna University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences - BOKU (2005)
Alicia Cabezudo, Argentina: Social Scientist, focus on education for peace and global learning, PhD at the University of Buenos Aires (1991)

Goals:
- Develop a clearer picture on synergistic effects regarding intercultural communication
- Demonstrating the potential of interculturality in sciences and humanities
- Building networks between different actors attending the workshop

Topics:
- What is the added value of intercultural research teams?
- What is the potential of academically trained persons with migration background in Austria?

Target group:
Individuals from different countries with academic background, university staff, students, scholarship holders, entrepreneurs and private business representatives, journalists and people with a general interest in the topic.
